Welcome to the Society for Confraternity Studies!

The Society for Confraternity Studies is devoted to research on all aspects of medieval and early modern confraternities, religious guilds, hevrot, tariqa, and futuwwa. Founded in 1989 in Toronto, Canada, the society sponsors sessions on confraternities at major conferences, organizes occasional conferences, publishes a journal, Confraternitas, and supports the moderated discussion list, Confrat-L.

Books and offprints donated by members and friends of the society are deposited in a “Confraternities Collection” at the Centre for Renaissance and Reformation Studies, Victoria College in the University of Toronto. All the donated items are entered in the “Books Received” rubric of the journal, and are made available for consultation at the CRRS.

We encourage you to explore our website, which provides background information about the society and its programs along with instructions on how to become a member of our community.
